PAUL KARIYA, By Mike Bonner

My profile of NHL hockey star Paul Kariya comes from Chelsea House Publishers as a beautifully printed, colorful library hardback. This great Japanese-Canadian player established himself as a dominant left wing for Disney's Anaheim Mighty Ducks almost immediately upon joining the team in 1994.

Since then, Kariya has amassed over 300 NHL points in goals and assists. Along with his friend and fellow forward Teemu Selanne, Kariya is a threat to score from anywhere on the ice.

Even veteran coaches and players who think that they have seen it all are dazzled by Kariya's speed, finesse, and constant inventiveness. From his early amateur days to his present status as a major National Hockey League attraction, Kariya has always been one of the most exciting players around. While playing for Shawn Walsh's Black Bears at the University of Maine, Kariya was the first freshman ever to win the Hobey Baker award, college hockey's equivalent of the Heisman trophy.

As a professional, Kariya has been a two time winner of the Lady Byng trophy for good sportsmanship. Off the ice, Kariya is one young sports millionaire who hasn't let success go to his head.

Kariya's reputation as a polite, considerate person is well deserved. In early 1998, Kariya donated a large portion of his salary to a collection of Orange County charities. It is one of many compassionate gestures Kariya has made in his career. My book is written for elementary school readers but contains information and hockey lore of interest to fans of all ages.

As an author, I enjoyed writing this book because Paul Kariya is such a fine young man. He is a role model in the best sense of the phrase. I hope Barnes and Noble customers find PAUL KARIYA as much fun to read as it was to write.
